Art lovers appreciate the value of authentic and quality art pieces, but buyers should exercise caution when purchasing a work of art, as there are unscrupulous sellers who sell fake artworks. Unfortunately, some buyers end up buying fake paintings and other pieces thinking they are originals. Below are four key tips on how to spot a fake painting.
1. Examine the painting to see whether it has the signature of the artist. Most artists include their signatures on their paintings, and the signature can either be handwritten or painted. Also, compare the placement and style of the signature with an artist’s other original pieces.
2. Use a magnifying glass and hold the painting up to the light while examining it from the back side to verify that it’s not a print. If it’s a genuine painting, you’ll likely notice light coming in through the canvas in places, because artists use varying degrees of paint throughout a painting. If it’s a printed copy, there won’t be any light whatsoever.
3. Check if the painting has a textured surface, as you should feel paint waves when you move your hand across a genuine painting. If the paint is extremely smooth, chances are high the painting is fake.
4. Hire a certified appraiser to get the painting authenticated, especially if the painting or artwork you wish to purchase is a high value piece.
